Founder and director of the William Byrd Festival, he is also founder and director of Cantores in Ecclesia, a choral ensemble of boys, girls, and adults which was in residence at St. Patrick's Church for seventeen years. As music director at various parishes in the Portland area since 1973, he has tried to restore the Gregorian and sacred polyphonic repertory to the modern Catholic liturgy.
He is director of the Schola Cantorum of Holy Rosary Church, which sings each Sunday for Mass and Solemn Vespers (in Latin). In January, 2002, he took the boys, girls and adults of Cantores in Ecclesia to Paris, where the choir sang the Duruflé Requiem in the Church of St. Etienne-du-Mont, the Fauré Requiem at the Madeleine and Langlais' Messe Solennelle in the Church of Ste. Clotilde.
The choir also performed
Poulenc's Messe en sol majeur for Sunday Mass at Nôtre Dame Cathedral.
Dean and his wife Janine have been married for thirty-three years; their daughter
Jane, son Blake, and daughter-in-law Anna all sing in Cantores in Ecclesia.
